The tiny Characters window pops up when you press its hotkey and cycles through characters according to what key you press next, displaying lowercase then uppercase variants and showing the character's ALT+xxxx shortcut. Press the spacebar to copy the character to the clipboard and close Characters, or take note of the shortcut combination for the character and press Esc to close the window.
